What Is Domain Authority? An Honest Explanation

What DA really is

Domain Authority is a score from 0 to 100 created by Moz. It predicts how likely a domain is to rank, based largely on the quantity and quality of links pointing at it. Google does not use it. It's a third-party estimate — a useful one, but an estimate.

DR (Ahrefs' Domain Rating) and AS (Semrush's Authority Score) are the same idea with different math. Sellers quote whichever number makes their inventory look best, so always ask which tool a number comes from.

Why people still use it

Because it's fast. Checking a domain's link profile properly takes minutes per site; DA gives you a one-second filter. For screening hundreds of potential placement targets, that speed is genuinely valuable.

It also correlates loosely with real strength. A random DA 70 site almost always has a stronger link profile than a random DA 20 site. The metric fails at the edges, not in the middle.

Where DA misleads buyers

Three failure modes we see constantly. First, manipulated scores: expired domains rebuilt purely to sell links can carry inflated DA with zero traffic. Second, domain-level scores hiding weak pages: a DA 60 domain can still host thin, unindexed pages.

Third, niche blindness. A DA 55 site in your exact niche is usually a better buy than a DA 65 generalist site that writes about crypto on Monday and gardening on Friday. DA says nothing about relevance.

How to use DA when buying links

Treat DA as a minimum filter, never a goal. Set your floor (DA 30 for volume work, DA 50+ for authority pushes), then check the things DA can't show you: organic keywords in your niche, real traffic, and whether the page you're buying is indexed.

If a seller can't tell you the traffic or indexing status of their placements, the DA number they're selling you is doing all the work — and that's a bad sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Relevance, traffic and indexation matter more once you're above a reasonable floor. A relevant DA 40 site can outperform an irrelevant DA 70 site.

Google doesn't see DA at all. What matters is the actual link profile behind the score — spammy patterns hurt regardless of the metric.
